Morning to Afternoon: Departure and Arrival

Your journey begins from Kathmandu or Pokhara depending on your starting point.

If traveling from Kathmandu, you will either take a tourist bus or private vehicle, which takes approximately 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The drive passes through river valleys, small towns, and hillside landscapes, gradually descending into the warmer lowlands of Nepal known as the Terai region.

Alternatively, you may take a short domestic flight to Bharatpur Airport, followed by a 30 to 45 minute drive to the hotel area near Sauraha.

Upon arrival in the Chitwan region, you will check in at your jungle lodge or resort located near the buffer zone of Chitwan National Park. After check-in, you will be welcomed with refreshments and a short briefing about the safari program, safety rules, and activities scheduled for the next few days.

Lunch is usually served at the lodge, offering a mix of Nepali and continental dishes. After lunch, you can rest or explore the surroundings of the resort, which are often located near forest edges or the Rapti river area.

Evening: Tharu Cultural Program

In the evening, you will participate in a Tharu cultural experience. The Tharu people are indigenous to the Chitwan region and have a unique cultural heritage.

You will be taken to a cultural center or village setting where you can observe traditional Tharu stick dance performances, fire dances, and folk music. The performances are usually accompanied by explanations of Tharu customs, traditional lifestyle, and their historical relationship with the jungle environment.

After the cultural program, you will return to your lodge for dinner.

Overnight stay will be at a jungle lodge or resort near Chitwan National Park.

Early Morning: Canoe Ride on Rapti River

The day begins early in the morning, usually around 6:30 AM. You will be taken to the Rapti River for a traditional canoe ride. The canoe is typically a narrow wooden boat used by local guides.

During the canoe ride, you will float quietly along the river, which allows for close observation of wildlife. Common sightings include marsh mugger crocodiles resting along the riverbanks and gharial crocodiles with long narrow snouts. The river is also rich in birdlife such as kingfishers, herons, and storks.

This section of the river lies close to the buffer zone of Chitwan National Park.

Mid-Morning: Jeep Safari in Chitwan National Park

After the canoe ride, you will return to the lodge for a short break and then proceed for a jeep safari inside Chitwan National Park.

The jeep safari typically lasts 3 to 5 hours depending on the route. You will enter deep forest areas, grasslands, and wetlands within the park. A trained naturalist guide will accompany you to explain animal behavior and track wildlife signs.

During the safari, there is a good chance of spotting one-horned rhinoceroses, spotted deer, wild boar, and various species of monkeys. Sloth bears may occasionally be seen, although they are rare. Bengal tigers are present in the park but are extremely difficult to spot due to their camouflage and large territory.

The safari also provides insight into the ecosystem of sal forests, riverine habitats, and open grasslands.

Afternoon: Lunch and Rest

After returning from the safari, you will have lunch at the lodge. The afternoon is usually kept for rest, relaxation, or optional short walks around the lodge area.

Late Afternoon: Jungle Walk

In the late afternoon, you will join a guided jungle walk with a trained naturalist and sometimes an armed ranger. The walk typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours.

During this walk, you will explore the buffer zone forest and learn about smaller wildlife, plants, insects, and bird species that are often missed during jeep safaris. You may also observe monkey troops, deer movement trails, and various medicinal plants used by local communities.

The guide will also explain how animals and humans coexist in the region.

Evening: Leisure Time at Lodge

After returning to the lodge, you will have free time. Some lodges offer optional presentations on wildlife, conservation efforts, or documentary screenings.

Dinner will be served at the lodge, followed by overnight stay.

Early Morning: Bird Watching Activity

On the final day, you will begin early in the morning, typically around 5:30 to 6:00 AM, for a bird-watching tour. This is one of the best times to observe wildlife activity as animals are most active during cooler hours.

Chitwan is considered one of the best bird-watching destinations in South Asia, with more than 500 recorded species. During the walk, you may observe hornbills, eagles, woodpeckers, paradise flycatchers, kingfishers, and various migratory birds depending on the season.

The bird-watching session usually takes place near wetlands, riverbanks, and forest edges within the buffer zone.

Breakfast and Checkout

After the bird-watching activity, you will return to the lodge for breakfast. You will then pack your belongings and complete the checkout process.

Return Journey

After checkout, you will begin your return journey to either Kathmandu or Pokhara depending on your onward travel plan.

The drive back to Kathmandu typically takes 5 to 6 hours, while travel to Pokhara may take around 6 to 7 hours by road.
