The Mustang region is a remote and mountainous area in the northwestern part of Nepal, located in the Himalayas near the border with Tibet (China). It lies in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, which makes it a dry, desert-like region despite being in the Himalayas.
Mustang is famous for its dramatic landscapes of rocky cliffs, deep valleys, and barren hills, as well as its strong Tibetan-influenced culture. Historically, it was an independent kingdom known as the Kingdom of Lo, and its capital is Lo Manthang, a walled city that preserves ancient Buddhist traditions.
The region is divided into Upper Mustang and Lower Mustang. Upper Mustang is more isolated and culturally preserved, while Lower Mustang is more accessible and includes popular pilgrimage sites like Muktinath.
Mustang is also known for its ancient monasteries, cave dwellings, colorful festivals, and its importance as a historical trade route between Nepal and Tibet.
